Se supone que la mítica fundación de la República Romana ocurrió en 509 a.C.E. cuando el último rey etrusco fue derrocado. El ascenso de Augusto al poder en el 27 a.C.E. marcó el fin de la República Romana y la formación del Imperio. Dioses y religiones de otras partes del imperio llegaron a la capital de Roma, incluida la diosa egipcia Isis, el dios persa Mitras y, por último, el cristianismo.
