Las evaluaciones sensibles, empáticas y sistemáticas de la calidad de la práctica religiosa en forma publicada son en gran parte inexistentes, especialmente desde un sentido común o bases interreligiosas. O mejor dicho, el campo está en su infancia. Los siguientes libros son un buen lugar para comenzar a estudiar más a fondo, aunque la mayoría están escritos dentro de un contexto mayoritariamente cristiano.

Ronald L. Grimes, Crítica ritual: estudios de caso en su práctica, ensayos sobre su teoría
(Columbia, SC: Prensa de la Universidad de Carolina del Sur, 1990). (Grimes trata aquí de establecer un campo académico de crítica ritual, no sólo de ritual religioso sino también de ritual en el drama y otras áreas de la vida. Le preocupa identificar qué hace que el ritual salga bien o mal, qué lo hace tener éxito y qué lo hace fallar).
Hans Kung, en su Responsabilidad Global: En busca de una nueva ética mundial, trans. John Bowden (Nueva York: Crossroad, 1991). (Kung desarrolla su argumento dentro de un contexto explícitamente interreligioso y no duda en plantear preguntas críticas sobre la práctica dentro de cada tradición religiosa. Su argumento, sin embargo, se mantiene al nivel de generalizaciones y no llega a muchos detalles.)
