    Es eurocéntrico referirse a todas las filosofías de Asia como “orientales” ya que agrupa injustamente las filosofías bastante diversas que se desarrollaron en Asia occidental (zoroastrismo), Asia meridional (budismo, jainismo, hinduismo, sijismo) y Asia oriental (budismo ch'an, taoísmo, confucianismo, sintoísmo) en una sola unidad que implica que son bastante similares. Aparte de su relativa proximidad geográfica, las diversas filosofías son, en muchos sentidos, más diferentes a aquellas filosofías que se han desarrollado en Europa y en otras partes del mundo. Esta primera Unidad explora algunos de los puntos de vista filosóficos más antiguos que subyacen a gran parte de la filosofía que se ha desarrollado en el este de Asia, particularmente en China y Japón. Estos son el taoísmo, el confucianismo y los fundamentos filosóficos de las religiones sintoístas.
