Una vez más, es importante un ambiente que fomente la disidencia, y el líder del grupo debería alentar a la gente a formular objeciones. Muchos sesgos grupales son menos probables si se permite que los miembros del grupo expresen desacuerdo, ya que el grupo estará expuesto a puntos de vista alternativos. Será más fácil romper el agarre de una manera singular de ver los temas relevantes. Incluso puede ser útil que alguien desempeñe el papel de defensor del diablo. A veces también es útil discutir primero los temas en subgrupos (para fomentar el desarrollo de puntos de vista alternos). Y buscar las opiniones de personas ajenas al grupo también proporciona otra perspectiva.
