En última instancia, después de que la parte occidental del Imperio Romano cayera a fines del siglo V, fue la iglesia cristiana la que llevó a cabo al menos partes de la civilización romana, el aprendizaje y la cultura. Una de las ironías históricas de este período de la historia es que a pesar de que el Imperio de Roma comenzó a declinar y (eventualmente) colapsar políticamente, vivió gracias a unas ideas y creencias que surgieron originalmente en el contexto romano -vivió ideológica y espiritualmente-.
