Escepticismo vs. cinismo

“Si bien el escepticismo es saludable, el cinismo —verdadero cinismo— es tóxico” (“Astroturfing: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver”).

Según lo define el Oxford English Dictionary:

Escéptico: No se convence fácilmente; tener dudas o reservas
Cínico: Creer que las personas están motivadas puramente por el interés propio; desconfiadas de la sinceridad o integridad humanas

Cuando se trata de información que encuentras en tu investigación personal, profesional o académica, un enfoque escéptico puede ser productivo. Por ejemplo, los escépticos de la información pueden tardar un momento en verificar los hechos, verificar o investigar una fuente antes de usarla o compartirla.

Sin embargo, cuando el escepticismo se convierte en cinismo y desconfianza profunda, la investigación puede volverse improductiva. Los cínicos de la información pueden sentirse impotentes para identificar fuentes confiables y útiles. Es decir, mientras aprenden a cuestionar todo, no han empezado a creer en nada —incluso fuentes de información altamente creíbles.
