El maíz o maíz es un cultivo C4 anual de verano en la familia Poaceae, o pasto que tiene altas demandas de nutrientes. A menos que se utilicen prácticas de conservación del suelo, los campos de maíz no tienen raíces vivas protegiendo al suelo de la erosión y proporcionando otros beneficios de calidad del suelo después de la cosecha en otoño, invierno y primavera. Estados Unidos es el mayor productor de maíz del mundo. Los suelos y el clima, particularmente en el Medio Oeste, permiten altos rendimientos de maíz; y una inversión significativa en investigación agrícola ha producido híbridos de maíz de alto rendimiento y tecnologías de producción, como fertilizantes, prácticas de control de plagas, equipos agrícolas y riego. La investigación también ha desarrollado diversos usos para las grandes cantidades de maíz que se producen en Estados Unidos, y Estados Unidos es también un importante exportador de maíz.
