Un artículo manufacturado puede ser producido en diversas etapas o procesos. En algunos casos, la producción inicial produce un producto terminado y procesarlo adicionalmente da como resultado un producto diferente. En otros casos, puede haber un mercado para un bien manufacturado parcialmente terminado, donde el comprador finalmente completa el producto según sus propias especificaciones. Un fabricante puede tener que decidir si vender un producto en una etapa inicial o procesarlo posteriormente. La opción preferida es la que es más beneficiosa financieramente.

Ejemplo

Morning Roast Coffee, Inc. produce café tostado oscuro en lotes de 5,000 libras. El costo de los materiales es de $5.80 por libra. El café tostado oscuro se puede vender sin procesamiento adicional por $9.70 por libra o puede procesarse más para producir descafeinado tostado oscuro, que se puede vender por $12.10 por libra. El procesamiento en descafeinado requiere costos adicionales de $7,480 por lote. El procesamiento adicional también provocará una pérdida de producto de 4% debido a la evaporación.

El análisis diferencial primero considera los diferentes ingresos de cada alternativa y luego los costos respectivos. Incluso con la pérdida de producto del 4% por el procesamiento posterior, el café descafeinado resulta en mayores ingresos. La compañía debeprocesar el lote aún más.
