Las reacciones radicales están compuestas por secuencias de reacciones elementales. Una reacción radical elemental es aquella que no produce un intermedio. Más elementales, las reacciones radicales consisten en la transformación de un radical en otro, pero también califican aquellas que crean radicales a partir de no radicales o hacen que los radicales desaparezcan. En lo que respecta a los radicales, una reacción elemental o crea un radical a partir de un no radical, transforma un radical en otro, o hace que un radical desaparezca.
