Las reacciones radicales están compuestas por secuencias de reacciones elementales. Una reacción radical elemental es aquella que no produce un intermedio. Más elementales, las reacciones radicales consisten en la transformación de un radical en otro, pero también califican aquellas que crean radicales a partir de no radicales o hacen que los radicales desaparezcan. Las reacciones elementales se listan de forma general en la Tabla 1. Se discuten ejemplos de carbohidratos que sufren cada tipo de reacción.
