La agricultura es el sistema ambiental-alimentario más practicado e influyente, aunque no es el único, ya sea históricamente o en la actualidad. Los sistemas ambiente-alimentario en general y la agricultura, en particular, son un complejo sistema acoplado que combina los sistemas humanos y naturales y subyace a la vida humana, las funciones culturales y sociales. Las distintas interacciones entre el hombre y el medio ambiente de la agricultura, incluyendo la domesticación y el manejo de diversos hábitats para la cría de plantas y animales, han existido por más de 10,000 años y fueron precedidas y coexisten con otros sistemas ambiente-alimento como la caza-recolección. Las interacciones humano-ambiente fueron tan integrales a los orígenes de la agricultura como a nuestra comprensión de la agricultura industrial moderna y las alternativas agrícolas en nuestro período actual de la historia. Las interacciones humano-ambiente también pueden ayudar a comprender la historia de los sistemas alimentarios entre el inicio de la agricultura y la actualidad. Considerar las interacciones humano-ambiente en el contexto de los parámetros históricos y geográficos mencionados anteriormente proporciona una visión general que sirve para introducir las siguientes dos secciones del curso que se centran en los sistemas ambientales (Módulos 4-9) y los sistemas sociales (Módulos 10-11). Los conceptos de sistemas de conductores y retroalimentación en el desarrollo y funcionamiento de los sistemas alimentarios también deberían ayudarlo a comprender la región focal que examinará en su proyecto final.
