    Los resultados presentados en módulos anteriores para armaduras, vigas y otras formas simples proporcionan gran parte de la información necesaria en el diseño de estructuras portantes. Sin embargo, los ingenieros de materiales y estructuras necesitan estimar rutinariamente tensiones y deflexiones en artículos geométricamente más irregulares. Esta es la función del análisis de estrés, con lo que nos referimos a la colección de técnicas teóricas y experimentales que va más allá del enfoque de análisis directo utilizado hasta ahora. Este es un campo de carrera por derecho propio, y estos módulos se limitarán a esbozar solo algunas de sus características principales.
