Uno de estos es la migración de un grupo fosfatoxi de C-2 a C-1 en un anillo piranoide o furanoide (eq 1), 1 y el otro es la eliminación de este grupo de C-3' en derivados nucleotídicos (eq 2). 2 A pesar de que estas reacciones son diferentes en su resultado y muy específicas en cuanto al tipo de estructura que experimenta reacción, son mecanísticamente similares. Un indicio de esta similitud es que cada reacción comienza formando un radical en el que un grupo fosfatoxi está relacionado con β con el centro radical (eq 3).
