    Por simplicidad, asumimos, que el láser opera en los modos fundamentales transversales y, por lo tanto, solo tenemos que tratar los modos longitudinales del láser de manera similar a un resonador Fabry-Perot paralelo plano simple (Figura: 5.1). Consideramos una polarización del campo solo, sin embargo, como diremos más adelante para algunas dinámicas de polarización láser bloqueadas en modo cobrará importancia.

    La tarea del bloqueo de modos es conseguir que tantos de los modos longitudinales sean láser de una manera sincrónica de fase, de tal manera que la superposición de todos los modos represente un pulso con una extensión espacial mucho más corta que la cavidad. El pulso se propagará entonces a la velocidad de grupo correspondiente a la frecuencia central del pulso.
