Este capítulo da una discusión bastante breve sobre la convivencia entre diferentes estados (“fases”) de colecciones de muchas partículas similares, y transiciones entre estas fases. Debido a la complejidad de estos fenómenos, que involucran interacciones de partículas, los resultados analíticos cuantitativos en este campo se han obtenido solo para unos pocos modelos muy simples, típicamente dando solo una descripción muy aproximada de los sistemas reales.
