Como sabemos, la ecuación anterior carece de cualquier solución de número real. Para que este concepto tenga sentido, debemos extender nuestras nociones preestablecidas sobre qué son los números.
Dejaremos que la unidad imaginaria participe en las operaciones aritméticas habituales de suma y multiplicación, tratándola como una cantidad algebraica que puede participar en pie de igualdad que los números reales. Es uno de los descubrimientos más profundos de las matemáticas que esta idea aparentemente arbitraria da lugar a poderosos métodos computacionales con aplicaciones en numerosos campos.
