La transformada de Fourier es una de las herramientas matemáticas más importantes utilizadas para analizar funciones. Dada una función arbitraria\(f(x)\), con un dominio real (\(x \in \mathbb{R}\)), podemos expresarla como una combinación lineal de ondas complejas. Los coeficientes de la combinación lineal forman una función contraparte compleja,\(F(k)\), definida en un dominio onda—número (\(k \in \mathbb{R}\)). Resulta que a menudo\(F\) es mucho más fácil de tratar que\(f\); en particular, las ecuaciones diferenciales para a menudo se\(f\) pueden reducir a ecuaciones algebraicas para\(F\), que son mucho más fáciles de resolver.
